The brief
The Grand Arcade Car Park in Wigan was equipped with 216 Holophane Atlanta luminaires, each consuming approximately 115 watts when ballast losses were included. A number of fittings were inoperative, as were several integral emergency luminaires. Existing control systems — timeclocks, PIR detectors and photocells — were also found to be ineffective during the onsite survey. APCOA wanted to increase overall lighting levels, ensure adequate emergency lighting in line with current health and safety requirements, and reduce energy consumption and ongoing maintenance costs.
What we did
Morgan Hope retrofitted the existing Holophane Atlanta fittings on a one-for-one basis with bespoke LED gear trays incorporating individual microwave motion detectors. Where the original twin 55W PLL lamps consumed 115W per fitting, the new LED retrofit consumes 58W at full output and just 12W when no occupancy is detected — while still providing adequate background lighting. Morgan Hope's internal electrical support team (DT Electrical) also undertook the replacement and refurbishment of the existing timeclocks and photocell control systems. The work was carried out outside normal operating hours to minimise disruption.
Outcome
Mini-meters recorded a daily energy consumption reduction from 14.569 kW to 4.624 kW on circuit DB 17 — a saving of approximately 68.26%. On circuit DB 18 (rooftop external lighting) consumption dropped from 4.170 kW to 0.339 kW — a saving of approximately 91.87%. Projected across the entire facility this equates to an estimated 70% reduction in energy consumption — annual costs falling from £17,019 to £5,105.70, a saving of £11,913.30. Average post-installation LUX levels exceeded EN recommended minimums and all emergency lighting requirements were certified.
“Working with Morgan Hope and in particular Jonathan and David throughout the Grand Arcade, Wigan LED lighting installation has been a pleasure. Their levels of communication throughout the project have been exceptional and the aftercare provided post the install has been excellent. The team deployed to complete the installation worked in a professional and efficient manner working closely with the operational team on site to minimise disruption and complete to schedule.”
