The brief
The existing lighting installation at Preston Railway Station Car Park was predominantly Holophane Atlanta luminaires installed at high level. Lorne Stewart PLC Energy Services were tasked with developing an energy and environmental saving project for the car park, with the requirement to maintain the lighting levels and have minimum disruption to the existing infrastructure. Several options were considered including complete replacement of luminaires, retro-fitment of Holophane LED upgrade, and bespoke retrofit LED Gear Tray manufactured by Morgan Hope Lighting. Longevity of warranty, payback and capital costs all had to be balanced.
What we did
After a successful trial using the Morgan Hope LedLite Linear LED PCB system retrofit installed directly into the existing luminaire housings, a full replacement programme was agreed. The retrofit approach maintained existing infrastructure while achieving the required lumen levels and energy savings. During the project some four hundred fluorescent lamp based luminaires were replaced, and the scheme was extended to replace another two hundred additional luminaires at Runcorn Railway Station Car Park.
Outcome
Annual savings following the LED installation measured at 312,000 kWh, 156,000 kg CO2 and £31,000 — slightly above the anticipated 65% load reduction. Actual electrical consumption monitored from the main half-hour data meter showed savings of 26,000 kWh per month. The investment delivered a payback period of less than three years, while improving lumen output, uniformity, lamp life and overall ambience for the client and staff.
